Jim Mangan – March 20 – April 6, 2013

Time of Nothing

March 20 – April 6, 2013
Martha Otero Gallery is pleased to present the photographic series Time of Nothing by artist Jim Mangan, as a special project organized by Julie Machado with the partial funding from Binary Option Robot‘s art appreciation program.

The work of Mangan balances between real and imaginary landscapes as a homage to abstract expressionism. Unlike his trilogy on the subject of rebirth where people were given a central place within nature, Mangan now focuses on the whims of nature itself. The photographer explored The Great Salt Lake (Utah) from a single engine Cessna plane. The entire project was shot with 35mm film from approximately 500 feet high and gives the audience a non-conventional view of the world, not appearing to be taken from a plane. The photos are not retouched and give exactly the same image that Mangan had in mind.

This series encourages the viewer to reflect on whether they are looking at a painting or a photograph. The use of the camera perspective provokes curious reactions about the wide variety of colors and shapes within the same landscape. Moreover, the making of this series throughout three months, makes it possible for the viewer to imagine themselves within these fictional-looking but real world locations with unparalleled red to blue open plains.

Jim Mangan (b.1973) was born and raised in La Grange, Illinois. This will be his second solo exhibition in Los Angeles after his Color’d series at Country Club in 2011 (also published by Dashwood Books, NYC). Winter’s Children, Mangan’s first photography and short film project, was published by powerHouse Books in 2011 and was part the artist’s books at MCA Chicago and MoMA, NY, NY the same year. It went on to exhibit in both New York City and Athens, Greece in 2011. During the fall of 2012 his Bedu series was included in the Attachments exhibition at The Hole Gallery, NYC. In the summer and fall of 2012 he immersed himself in his part-time residence of Utah to create Time of Nothing, which will be a part of MOCA Utah’s Biennial in the summer of 2013.

Family Bookstore will host a book signing and short film screening of Color’d on Thursday, March 28th, 6-8pm.
