ALVARO ILIZARBE

Surveying

August 10 - September 13, 2013
Opening reception: Saturday, August 10th, from 6 - 9pm.

Martha Otero Gallery is pleased to present Alvaro Ilizarbe’s Surveying. For this exhibition, Ilizarbe showcases new paintings and a site-specific installation. He depicts landscape imagery on topographical tectonic plate shaped panels. The amorphous sculptural wall structures lead through a passageway of patterned wallpapers portraying the elements in the earth’s stratum.

Ilizarbe's monochromatic black ink paintings and interlocking patterns capture the energy and abstract essence of terrain surrounding Los Angeles while evoking literati paintings. The work relates to the geo-morphological process and the constant change in landform.

An accomplished graphic designer, Ilizarbe has collaborated with fashion designers and internationally recognized commercial brands. His background informs the design elements, patterns, textiles, and graphics in his work. He recently executed a large scale mural for “The Arts Initiative”, a newly formed collective dedicated to placing highly interactive visual art in public venues, this initial installation housed within the forthcoming Fashion Outlets of Chicago.

Alvaro Ilizarbe was born in Lima, Peru in 1981, he lives and works in Los Angeles.
